Simple ways to enjoy eating outdoors
Eating outside has a way of making even an ordinary meal feel more relaxed and enjoyable. With a few simple touches, you can create an outdoor table that feels welcoming, pretty and comfortable. Here are a few tips to help you along your way.
Start by choosing your spot. If you feel like a change from your patio and want to mix things up a little, move your table into the garden, under a tree, or near a flower bed. This small shift away from the house can instantly make things feel more special.
Layering helps add warmth and texture. A simple linen tablecloth or something lightly patterned is a great base. Add placemats, a tray, or a few pieces that feel colourful and personal rather than perfectly matched. Candles and lanterns are a lovely addition, especially as the light starts to fade.
Flowers bring everything together. Pop a relaxed bunch from the garden or a local shop in small vases or storage tins, scattering lots down the middle of the table. Mix bright, seasonal colours like oranges, yellows, reds, and a few soft blues to keep the table feeling fresh and colourful.
Fruit works beautifully as both decoration and something to eat. Bowls of strawberries, citrus, or stone fruit add colour and a sense of abundance, while giving guests something easy to snack on. Here I’ve used brightly coloured baskets which look so pretty.
Keep drinks simple, but think about how they are presented such as a nice carafe on a pretty tray with matching glasses. Lovely glassware is key, I use it as part of my design as well as having it as something functional. A colourful spritz or a chilled jug of water in a nice carafe goes a long way. Bright orange aperitif drinks add a pop of colour, and good glassware makes everything feel a little more decadent.
Food should feel relaxed and generous. Large baskets of fresh bread and a few small sharing plates are perfect; nothing too structured, just easy and inviting.
Finally, think about comfort. Add a cushion to a bench, and keep a throw or two nearby in case it gets cool, to make sure guests feel warm and comfortable.
Alfresco styling doesn’t need to be complicated. The aim is simply to create a space that feels inviting, relaxed, and enjoyable to spend time in.
