Hold your own Easter Olympics!

At this time of year we can look forward to warmer weather and Easter! Of course many parents dread the inevitable chocolate binge, but there is a way to keep your kids active over the bank holiday weekend: embrace the season and the weather by hosting your own Easter Olympics! Here are ten Easter-themed events for the perfect home Sports Day.

1. Egg hunt

The Easter egg hunt is a classic tradition. Simply hide some eggs in your garden, give each child a bucket and let them loose to hunt! You could hide hard-boiled eggs that you've decorated at home, yummy chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with mini toys - but whatever you use, make sure it's colourful so they're easy to find! 2. Egg rolling

Egg rolling has been going on in England for hundreds of years, under the name 'pace-egging'. It's a game of fastest egg wins: just use a wooden spoon to roll your (hard-boiled) egg across a lawn, or make use of gravity and send it spinning down a hill! Whoever's egg crosses the finish line first wins.

3. Egg tapping

This is the Easter equivalent of conkers. Hardboil an egg, decorate it as beautifully as you can, and then tap it against someone else's egg. The aim is to break other people's eggs without cracking yours. Make sure you tap the pointy ends together, and don't resort to historical cheating techniques, like using eggs made of concrete and marble!

4. String maze

This one takes a little preparation but, trust us, it's worth it. Put out a few large obstacles, such as tables and chairs, to loop your strings around and use one long strand of string for each child taking part. Start all the trails in one room and label each one with a child's name so everybody has their own string to follow. They can wind up their strings as they go and find an Easter egg at the end of the maze!

5. Egg toss

For this messy game, give a fresh egg (not hard-boiled!) to each competitior and have them all stand behind a line to make their throws. The winner is the person who throws their egg the farthest without breaking it. Good luck: the world record stands at a staggering 98.5 metres! Another version of the game is to have everybody stand in two lines facing each other: each person throws to their team member and moves one step further apart after every successful catch.

6. Egg and spoon race

Another classic, all you need for an egg and spoon race is - surprisingly - eggs and spoons! This time your eggs can be hard-boiled, or raw if you want to make things a little bit more tricky. Each competitor carries an egg on a spoon to the finish. You can't touch the eggs with your hands and the first one over the line (with their egg) wins!

7. Pin the tail on the bunny

An Easter twist on a party favourite, you can make your own 'Pin the Tail' very easily at home. Simply print off a picture of a rabbit or, if you're artistically inclined, draw one yourself. Then cut out paper tails or get hold of some fluffy pompoms, and add double-sided tape to the back of them. Blindfold the children, spin them around and see how close they can get to sticking the tail in the right place!

8. Easter piñata

Nothing says Easter like sweets, but there's no reason why your little ones shouldn't work for them! You can buy a readymade piñata or make one yourself out of cardboard and tissue paper: just don't forget to fill it with tasty treats. On the day of the party hang it up and blindfold the kids and give them each a turn whacking the piñata with a stick. As soon as it breaks, it's a free-for-all for the chocolate!

9. Hopping race

You've heard of a sack race - well, just add a pair of bunny ears and you have an Easter hopping race. Get your hands on some child-friendly sacks and sew white pompoms on the back for rabbit tails. Give each entrant a pair of bunny ears, blow the starting whistle and watch the winner hop to glory!

10. Egg pass

This is a great game for all the family. Get into teams of about four or five people and stand in a line. Give each team an egg, count down 3, 2, 1 and, as quickly as you can, pass the egg from person to person down the line. The twist: you can't touch the eggs with your hands, you can only hold it under your chin. Beware, this can get messy!
