Do you know a supermum? A one-woman whirlwind who nurtures family and career with awesome efficiency, an inspiration to her children and her employees? Perhaps you are one!

But there's another level of mums who are just as magnificent: so utterly capable, so rampantly successful, so simply inspirational that it defies belief. Here are our top 5 iconic mums.

1. Angelina Jolie

Anyone who’s mum to six kids has their work cut out. But Angelina seems to have taken to motherhood like a duck to water. One biological child and three adopted children from across the developing world were enough to make Angelina quite a special mum, but then she gave birth to twins and expanded the family even further.

Being a top-flight Hollywood A-lister is one thing, but it’s her work as a UNHCR ambassador and fame for her work on women’s rights that’s Angelina’s greatest gift to her kids. Recently made an honorary Dame by the Queen for her work campaigning against sexual violence in war zones, she’s an inspiration and a fantastic role model for her brood.

2. Madonna

Say what you like about Madonna, she’s a good mum. Daughter Lourdes living regular student life at the University of Michigan. Son Rocco Richie caused a storm of controversy when he posted images of an ISIS atrocity on social media, but Mum weighed in to support him for raising awareness. Then there are the Malawian-born adopted children, David Banda and Mercy James, who Madonna makes sure to keep in touch with their African heritage.

With over 300 million record sales to her name, Madonna is the biggest selling female recording artist of all time. What's more, this show-stopping, boundary-pushing icon is also a shrewd business woman, and at the age of 56 she's about to release another album. This superstar mother has an incredible work ethic, and she's far from past it!

3. Hillary Clinton

By the time the time the US presidential election comes around in November 2016, Hillary Clinton will be 69 years old. Too old to become the first female US president? Never bet against a lady who is by any measure one of the great political survivors. It’s just a pity that her husband is at the root of so much of the trouble that’s come her way!

Few could argue with Hillary’s success at protecting her daughter, Chelsea, from the unwelcome focus of the international media spotlight. A gawky teenager when her father won the presidential vote in 1993, she’s now a doctor of philosophy and has referred to her mother as “my hero and my mother.”

4. Michelle Obama

Another American icon, Michelle Obama might be best known as the wife of President Obama, but she’s also a Harvard Law school graduate, long-time supporter of minority rights and a mother to two girls. In fact, it was Michelle who was instructed to mentor rookie lawyer Barack Obama at the law firm where she worked.

When it comes to motherhood, she's reported to emphasise normality, getting her girls Malia and Natacha out of the White House as often as she can and making family life a priority. She said in an interview with the Huffington Post, “It’s sitting down at the dinner table and having Barack’s day be the last thing anyone really cares about.”

5. JK Rowling

She’s the penniless single mum who became a billionaire by the power of her pen.  JK Rowling is an icon whose magical creation, Harry Potter, inspired a generation of young readers. But the invisibility cloak protecting her three children from the media spotlight speaks volumes about her abilities as a mum.

And it's not just about her children. Through her foundation, Volant Trust, Rowling's philanthropy has changed the lives of countless children and young people by closing poorly run orphanages. In an interview with the Daily Mail she said, "It is my dream that by the time my life ends, the very concept of taking a child away from its family and locking it away will seem to belong to a cruel, fictional world.”
