It’s only a few weeks until the start of the new school year but for kids, swapping the freedom of summer holidays for the classroom can be hard.

Bright, colourful school gear can help make the transition to the new term just that little bit more appealing. So to help your kids go back to school with style, here’s our pick of fun and funky classroom essentials.

School bag

Looking for a school bag? A backpack is a practical choice that’s roomy, easy to carry and leaves your child’s hands free. And when school uniform regulations mean adhering to a strict dress code, a snazzy rucksack like the Let’s go Fishing Children’s Backpack pictured above is a great way to inject some individuality into your little boy or girl’s look.

Choose from our range of children’s backpacks – your son or daughter is sure to find a cute, colourful design they love. And there’s also the added bonus of being able to spot your child amid the hometime playground throng.

Before you head to the shops looking for writing materials, have a rummage around the house. A new school year doesn’t have to mean brand new gear; in the family home, who knows what you might find in the drawer or down the back of the sofa.

Sometimes though, it’s nice to indulge in some stationery shopping to get your kids in the mood for school. As Mum in the Madhouse says: ‘Bright, shiny pencils, protractors, rulers and rubbers are tempting and may even help reluctant children get more excited about a return to school.’

Inspire your children to put pen or pencil to paper this new school year with a notebook they can use as a jotter, or perhaps as a journal. We have some fun and funky designs that will do the trick, like the Elephant Spiral notebook (above) or our sweet Blue Tit A6 Notebook.

For a fun activity to do together before term starts, why not pick up a plain notebook and decorate it? With the help of some stickers, glitter and glue, you can help your child create their own one-of-a-kind piece of school kit.

Lunch Box and Water Bottle

As a parent, don’t you hate it when your child gets home from school and you open their lunch box only to find half eaten sandwiches? If that sounds like you, take leaf from Slummy Single Mummy who suggests inspiring your little ones to eat a healthy lunch by getting them involved in making it. She says:

‘Take [your children] shopping to choose items they like to eat, have them grow their own cress; anything you can do that generates a feeling of involvement can make them more likely to actually then eat what they’re given.’

Make your child’s lunchtime the highlight of their day by giving them a lunch bag they’ll love to show off to their friends. They’ll love our retro World Map lunch bag or the collection of bright and cheerful Rusty and Friends boxes.

And don’t forget to pack a water bottle. A simple bottle with a sports cap is the way to go, like this Vintage Transport one which has a handy carry handle.

While you can trust the school first-aider to be on hand to patch up grazed knees and elbows, it doesn’t hurt to equip your child with some backup supplies, just in case – they’ll love the sense of self-reliance that comes from carrying their very own mini first aid kit. Add some antiseptic wipes, tissues and a handy box of raisins in case of emergency munchies, and your little one is good to go.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the summer before, as mummy blogger Life is Knutts says, it’s a case of: ‘Good luck fellow Comrades. Once more unto the breach…’
