It’s officially disco ball season: 6 ways to add sparkle to your home

It’s officially disco ball season and I’m very much here for it. There’s something about this time of year that makes me want to add a little more sparkle to the house. The evenings are drawing in, a brand-new series of Strictly Come Dancing is on and Christmas is beginning to enter my thoughts. If there is a disco ball season, I declare that it is officially now.

I’ve always loved decorating with pieces that are a little unexpected and fun, and Rex London's Disco collection is perfect for that. They no longer just belong to 1970s nightclubs either. When mixed in with more traditional pieces, greenery, candles and everyday objects, they add just the right amount of fun without taking over.

Here are six easy ways I have used them around the house.

1. Jazz up your kitchen shelves

My kitchen shelves are one of my favourite places to play around with. I love mixing practical pieces with things that simply make me smile and look pretty. A few disco balls dotted amongst plants, glasses, cookbooks and wooden boards instantly lift the shelves without making the whole space feel overly styled.

The best bit is when the sunlight catches them. Suddenly you have tiny flecks of light dancing across the walls and ceiling. It’s such a simple addition but completely changes the feel of the room.

2. Give your home bar a disco vibe

If there’s anywhere you can really go for it, it’s the bar or drinks cabinet. Disco balls were practically made for home bars.

Aperitivo Spritz metal serving tray, £9.95

Etched star coupe cocktail glasses, £19.95

I like adding disco ball straws to drinks and bringing in a fabulous disco-ball lamp. Mix them with cocktail glasses, bottles and a few rechargeable lights and suddenly the whole area comes to life. It doesn’t need to be overly styled or serious. In fact, the more playful the better. A home bar or drinks cabinet should be somewhere that makes you want to pour a drink, put some music on and have fun.

3. Hang one in your bedroom

Disco balls also work brilliantly in bedrooms, particularly a teenage girl’s room. A hanging disco ball is such an easy way to add something fun without having to completely redecorate the room. Hang one near a window and, when the sunlight catches it, you get those wonderful reflections all around the bedroom. It adds personality and a little glamour without being too grown-up or serious.

4. Create a sparkly bedroom display

Rather than hanging one large disco ball, another idea is to group a few smaller ones together. Place them on a shelf, dressing table or windowsill and mix them with fairy lights and lamps. Different sizes work really well together and create a lovely little display.

It’s an inexpensive way of changing the feel of a room, and because nothing is permanent, you can easily move them around when you fancy mixing things up.

5. Add disco balls to your Christmas tree

And then, of course, there’s Christmas. This really does seem to be the season of the disco ball Christmas tree. Disco ball baubles and decorations are everywhere, and I absolutely love them mixed amongst more traditional decorations.

You don’t need to replace your existing decorations or suddenly create a completely silver Christmas. Mix disco balls with what you already own, ribbons, traditional baubles, foliage, candles and decorations you’ve collected over the years. That mix of old, traditional and a little bit of sparkle is what makes it interesting.

6. Fill the space under your Christmas tree

Placing disco balls underneath the Christmas tree is such a fun way to fill that empty space before all the presents arrive. Use a mixture of different sizes and simply pile them underneath the tree amongst your existing decorations.

Once the presents start appearing, you can leave a few disco balls peeking through between the parcels. It adds sparkle without having to change your whole Christmas scheme.

With Strictly returning to our screens and Christmas getting closer, I think we can safely say the glitter ball is in season. Whether it’s sitting on a kitchen shelf or bedazzling a Christmas tree, there are so many ways to play around with them.

Enjoy making your home sparkle.
