We love a packed lunch at Dotcomgiftshop, not least because of all the fab, stylish boxes, bags and containers that go with it. But there's also practical reasons for taking your own sandwiches, not least a recent report that stated taking a packed lunch to work could save you nearly £2,000 a year. Suitably convinced? Here are some handy tips for a punch-packed-lunch.

Pick the right lunch box

Probably the number one reason people opt out of taking a packed lunch is the inconvenience factor. Dragging around a heavy lunch box on a long commute is certainly a turn-off, but if your smart about your choices, you can still travel light. Old-fashioned plastic lunch boxes (pictured above) are a great choice because they weigh very little and can store a decent amount of snacks. Alternatively, lunch bags are just as weightless and also have handles to make life even easier.

Pack efficiently

Keeping your packed lunch light isn't just about the equipment. Always think about the foods and drink you're putting in and apply common sense. For instance, drinks are usually the heaviest item, so think smart. Can you get water for free at work? Can you keep squash at the office? By taking heavy liquids out of the equation, you can significantly ease your burden. This also frees up valuable space for food.

Go Russian Doll

If you're worried about crushed food or the unusual blended aromas of sandwiches and snacks, miniature containers like those pictured above are a great solution. Going 'Russian Doll' and storing boxes within boxes can actually be a really efficient way to organise your lunch. And if you only want to take small items, they work as an ultra-lightweight standalone.

Keep it cool

Keeping food cool and tasting fresh is an essential requirement for a successful packed lunch. Foil-lined lunch bags do this better than any of the alternatives, so if you're facing a long commute in warm weather, they are probably the ideal choice. If you want to save the planet, look for versions that are made from recycled plastic.

Mix it up

Another frequent reason people give up on a packed lunch is a lack of variety. Make sure you mix things up and put different treats in every week if possible. Of course everyone wants to be healthy but a hard day at the office always seems just a little bit easier when you're looking forward to your lunch.
