How To: easy peasy clay keyring and necklace

Laura & Tia from Little Button Diaries are here with an easy-to-follow guide to making your very own little keyrings and jewellery. A perfect DIY for kids this weekend!

This sunny little jewellery set was inspired by the rainbow and cloud designs found on many Rex London products, such as the Magical Unicorn range, or the Happy Cloud collection. It’s really easy to make with a little polymer clay (such as Fimo).

You will need:

White, red, yellow, orange, green and blue polymer clay
Rolling pin
Cling film
Tin foil
Sharpie pens
Craft varnish
Templates (download the PDF)
3 small beads (hama beads work well)
Yellow embroidery thread
Glue
Keyring
Necklace

1. To make the rainbow necklace, begin by rolling some red clay out between two pieces of cling film. The cling film will stop the clay from sticking to your rolling pin or surface and allow you to easily see the thickness. The clay should be thin - about 2mm - and just bigger than the large rainbow template. Place the template on top of the clay and cut out with a knife.

2. Repeat with the yellow, green and blue clay using the three smaller rainbow templates to cut the clay.

3. Layer the rainbow clay up, making sure the bottom of each arc is lined up. Set the rainbow aside on a piece of tin foil.

4. For the keyring, roll out the yellow, orange and white clay as above and use the templates to cut yellow and orange sun pieces, and a white cloud.

5. Layer the sun pieces up and push down gently. Bake all three pieces on tin foil in the oven as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

6. Once hardened and cooled, use sharpie pens to mark faces onto the Happy Cloud and sun and give them little rosy cheeks. You can then add a slick of varnish to the clay to give them shine and add strength.

7. Glue a small bead to the back of each shape.

8. Tie yellow embroidery thread onto the sun and cloud and attach it to the keyring. Thread the rainbow onto a necklace. Your jewellery is all finished and ready to wear!
